NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

In 2010, Lambda Theta Alpha officially became a collegiate partner to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in an effort to have a larger and more united impact on a national philanthropic cause. The sorority is the first and only Latino Greek organization to commit to the hospital’s efforts to bring awareness to childhood cancer, life-threatening diseases and St. Jude within the Latino community and to fundraise for the hospital through a variety of events and programs.

In 2014, the sorority expanded its partnership with St. Jude by becoming an official partner of the annual St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer, which brings communities together across the nation during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to raise funds for the hospital. The sorority has repeatedly exceeded its sponsorship commitments and looks forward to this event every year.

As an organization, we have raised over $300k for St. Jude and as a chapter, Upsilon has raised over $3,000. Throughout the academic school year, the chapter hosts programs to raise awareness about the organization and encourages others to join against the fight against pediatric cancer.

Chapter Philanthropy

Cultural Academy for excellence (CAFE)

The Cultural Academy for Excellence (CAFE) is a 501©3 non profit corporation located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. CAFE began in 1996 with a grant from the Kaiser Permanente Building Hope Foundation. Founder and Executive Director Lorna Green together with the Board of Directors, committed professionals, parents and community leaders lend their expertise to keep CAFE’s program innovative and creative.

The Upsilon Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. chose CAFE to be our chapter philanthropy in 2016 and has been dedicated to the organization since. Sisters visit CAFE several times a week to assist the children with their school work, offer tutoring and as role models to the youth. A majority of the students at CAFE come from minority, low-income families and we strive to show them what it means to be an active member in the community. Sisters also gain a lot from the children; our time with them also benefits us as individuals simply by acknowledging that the time we offer to them gives even the slightest impact on their lives.

CAFE welcomes donations of all sorts! If you would like to donate supplies to the facility, it is located at 2705 Queens Chapel Road, Mount Rainer, MD 20712 or if you'd like to donate monetarily, you can visit https://cafeyouth.org/donate/
